R&D Firmware Engineer

Overview

As part of ABB’s Smart Power initiatives, you will design and deliver firmware for industrial protection devices, contributing to innovative software and system development. You’ll work within an R&D team, collaborating with architects and cross-functional colleagues to translate requirements into robust firmware. The role combines hands-on development with process improvement and agile practices, offering opportunities to influence IP creation and project delivery. This position leverages your technical depth to shape secure, reliable industrial solutions in a hybrid work setup.

Responsabilità

Design, develop, and implement firmware for industrial protection circuit breakers and communication modules

Improve firmware development and cybersecurity processes

Perform unit, integration, and system testing to ensure quality

Contribute to innovation and support patent-related activities

Participate in an Agile Scrum team (planning, stand-ups, reviews, retrospectives)

Collaborate with system architects and hardware/software developers to derive requirement specifications

Break down system requirements into firmware specifications

Requisiti fondamentali

M.Sc. or B.Sc. in Information or Electronic Engineering, Embedded Systems, or comparable field

Embedded C/C++ proficiency plus software engineering fundamentals

Experience with Python for scripting and test automation

3–5 years of firmware development for embedded industrial applications

Knowledge of embedded systems, MCUs, peripherals, interfaces, and RTOS preferred

Firmware debugging and root-cause analysis using probes, scopes, logic analyzers

Familiarity with structured development processes from analysis to documentation

Experience with industrial protocols (Modbus, Profinet, Ethernet/IP, IEC61850, Profibus, CAN bus) is a plus

Knowledge of embedded cybersecurity principles; secure development practices is a plus

Experience in Agile Scrum and a collaborative mindset; willingness to travel; English and Italian communication
